The Atlantic hurricane season has now brought Hurricane Irma upon us, which is traveling westward across the Atlantic and toward the Caribbean. By the end of the week, it is likely that the hurricane will affect the US mainland.
This morning, Hurricane Irma was declared a Category 5 hurricane, as meteorologists predicted last week. This has prompted multiple states of emergency declarations in places such as Florida, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and other islands in the Caribbean.
Stores all over the Caribbean islands are quickly seeing their shelves go empty, as local residents stock up on food, water, and batteries, among other items. Many of the islands are prepping for a long-term electricity outage.
You can track the progress of Hurricane Irma on the NOAA’s National Hurricane Centre online map.
